  1. General Information
Every parent has the right to home educate. Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA), the national advocate for home educators, recognizes two state home school organizations in Idaho: CHOIS and ICHE. Christian Homeschoolers of Idaho State (CHOIS) promotes home education. Idaho Coalition of Home Educators (ICHE) protects the right of families to home educate without restriction in the state of Idaho. ICHE membership is independent of membership in HSLDA and CHOIS and is open to all who support home education regardless of educational choice, religious affiliation, or age. With the support of HSLDA and CHOIS, along with 19 statewide ICHE Regional Coordinators, ICHE sponsors these services:

  2. Member Services
    1. Standardized Testing
At testing sites throughout the state, ICHE offers voluntary annual testing to home educated students, utilizing the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) and the Iowa Tests of Educational Development (ITED). Registration is open May 1 to August 1, online and by mail. Annual graphs comparing ICHE scores with Idaho and national public school scores are posted on the ICHE website.

    2. Legislative Day
At an annual Statehouse Pie Reception, ICHE testing data and student projects are displayed. Legislators and other public officials interact with students and parents concerning the excellence of home education.

    3. Legislative Analysis
ICHE legal advisors closely monitor pending legislation affecting home education. ICHE advisors testify on behalf of home education freedoms in legislative committee hearings, as well as consult with our state and national representatives to influence pending legislation as it relates to home education.

    4. Leadership Summit
ICHE representatives attend the HSLDA National Homeschool Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. HSLDA recognizes ICHE as its state liaison on legal and legislative issues.

    5. Honor Societies
ICHE-tested 5th through 12th grade students with qualifying composite scores are annually nominated to Who's Who. Additionally, those students with qualifying scores are designated Summa Cum Laude Scholars. Who's Who nominees and Summa Cum Laude Scholars are entitled to wear honor cords at the Idaho Homeschool Graduation.

    6. Member Discounts
Many businesses honor the ICHE Educator Discount Cards giving ICHE members educator discounts throughout the state.

    7. Email Legislative Alerts
ICHE emails its current members information concerning pending legislation, which directly relates to home education, including alerts and weekly ICHE & HSLDA legal updates.

    8. Website
Our website provides online membership and registration for testing and information on Idaho law, your legislators, Legislative Day, getting started homeschooling, high school helps, and homeschool issues. This site offers resources to support your home school, as well as statements from state and federal candidates regarding home education.

    9. Membership
Idaho enjoys tremendous freedoms in home education, due to the work of ICHE, which has defended these freedoms since 1992. Yet, ICHE needs the participation of every home educating family to continue in this endeavor. Recent challenges to home education have increased, as have the costs of responding effectively. ICHE is an Idaho, non-profit corporation with an all-volunteer staff. Donations and membership fees are the sole support of this organization. A small investment from each home educating family will enable ICHE to remain strong and viable.
